Achieving Your Goals: What’s Your Problem?

in Goal setting

Are you having trouble achieving your goals in life?  Many people have a constant, nagging feeling that they could be accomplishing more in their  career, relationships,  finances, etc.  It seems that they’re missing out on the best that life has to offer, but they can’t quite figure out why.  In many cases, it’s because they’re not working toward goals.  Oh, sure, if you ask them, a lot of them will tell you that they have a goal of moving up in their company, or making more money, or having a more active social life.  But those aren’t goals.  Those are just vague daydreams.  And that’s why so many people aren’t achieving their goals.  They don’t have any.

Real goals are specific, dated, and measurable.  If you want to accomplish something, you have to know exactly what is is if you ever hope to achieve it.  You want to lose weight?  That’s great, but who doesn’t?  And very few do, because they never write down “I will lose 25 pounds in the next six months and here are the steps I will take to make sure I meet my goal.”  That’s what a real goal looks like.  And, by the way, it has to be written down, too.  A goal in your head, no matter how specific, is nothing more than wishful thinking.

So if your life has been stagnating, and you feel like you’re going nowhere fast, it’s time to get serious about setting some real goals for yourself.  It’s no exaggeration to say that making a habit of goal setting can revolutionize your life.  Many of the most successful people in the world divide their lives into two periods, before they learned about the awesome power of goal setting, and after.  There’s a reason book stores have countless titles on the power of goal setting – it works.  Start making it work for you, and lose that stuck feeling forever.
