Business Goals are Important!

in Career Goal Setting

If you’re self employed, or owner of a small business, do you have business goals?  Setting them is key to your future success.  You should have goals for every aspect of your business – for your income, your employees, your return on investment, your growth and expansion, etc.  If you don’t have these written down, but only have vague hopes of doing better each year, then you’re not on the road to success.  You may indeed get lucky and have a good quarter, or a good year, but in all likelihood it won’t be nearly as good as it could have been if you had had written goals.
Every big company has business goals.  Setting them is how they got to be a big company in the first place, as a matter of fact.  They’ve got quarterly goals, yearly goals, five year goals, etc.  And these are broken down into smaller chunks, like goals for each department. When you think about it for a little while, you’ll come to realize that every organization in America, both business and non-profit,  is actually pursuing a goal.  Now, originally, that goal may have been quite vague, like “make money” or “fight animal abuse”, but along the way they’ve gotten a lot more specific.

And because they’ve gotten more specific, they’ve gotten much more effective at reaching their business goals.  Setting vague goals for yourself like “I want to make more money next year” aren’t really goals at all.  They’re just wishful thinking.   It’s that specificity that keeps you focused, and also helps you achieve your goals by giving you a benchmark to measure your progress.  If you want to improve your small business, then start today to come up with specific goals for the business for next quarter, next year, etc.  Once you learn how to set goals and achieve them, the sky is the limit.
