Effective Goal Setting: Defining Your Values

Defining your core values in life will definitely help you clarify and prioritize your goals. When you do this, you should write down all the values you have, would like to have, and admire in others. Take the time to list them down in no particular order – this is going to help you develop the skill of effective goal setting, with effective being the key word here.  The list should be long – mine had around 40 to 45 values listed, yours may even be longer! Once you get the list you would prioritize and identify your CORE values. These core values are the ones that define you, or the ones that you would like to define you if they don’t already.

I think this can be a difficult exercise, it was for me anyway. The best way to do it is to create the list over the course of a few days. After that, take the list with you wherever you go and circle the values that seem to come up as the most important. The objective is to narrow your list into your top five values, and these top five need to be prioritized. After you have a list of your top 5 values, or your core values, every goal you set will be based around these values. This is definitely an important step for effective goal setting. It is kind of like figuring out who you are and what is important so you don’t compromise what is important when setting your goals.

Just to give you an idea, my top five are in this order:

Integrity
Family
Health
Personal Development
Wealth

I debated in many ways to put family first, but then decided that as a mother, I set an example of how to live and be for my family: I want that to be one of integrity (which encompasses wholeness and honesty). I also believe I cannot have wealth without personal development. Furthermore, I need health before the last two values on my list, but I would sacrifice my health for my family! I know this list may change with age and perspective, but for now, these are my core values and what I use for effective goal setting.
