Effective Goal Setting: Create Your Mission Statement

I know, I know, this title sounds like you are a corporation or a business! But wait. To be successful, big businesses (and most small businesses…) do create mission statements! AND, these mission statements usually originate from the core values set by those who sit on the board.  So think about it, you are a business, you are in business for yourself, you are the CEO of you and you have the ability to make effective goal setting a way of doing business (or a way of living.)

The way to create a mission statement is to take your top five values and create a statement of how you want to “be”, or how you want to carry yourself from now on. What is your mission in life? This statement should be anywhere between 1-3 lines….again think of it like you are a business. If someone walked into your office building, what would it say in bold letters along the wall: My mission is to…..

If you have trouble writing a statement, then try to take each one of your values and complete this sentence. (YOUR VALUE) is my most important value because (FILL IN THE BLANK.) Then move on to your next value until you completed the exercise for all your values. After you do this, then try to put them together into your mission statement. Keep working on this for as long as it takes, it is yet another crucial step in effective goal setting.

I have to admit that on exercises like this, I am a little bit of a perfectionist. I decided to go as simple as possible. I was driving myself crazy with wanting and finding the right words. When it comes down to it my mission is honestly to live my life with integrity and enjoy my family, health, personal development, and wealth.

One more point: your statement should be timeless. It should be how you are (or want to be) now, and how you see yourself in 5, 10, or 20 years. Write it in the present tense. It is something you will refer to often as you develop your skills in effective goal setting.
