When we think of going to college, we tend to think of high school graduates or maybe even people in their 20′s and 30′s, but what about the 40-, 50- and even 60-year-old people who want to go back to school? If you fall into this category, maybe you had to get a job and never had the opportunity to get a college education. Well, we have news for you. You are never too old to go to college!
According to some of the more savvy voices in finance, now that the economy is in poor shape and jobs are few, it is those who have a degree that are getting the good jobs. And let’s face it, even the lesser paying jobs require a degree these days. If you are interested in a specialized field such as medical billing, nursing, teaching or even a bookkeeper position, one of the requirements specified in the job description is a degree. Older people have the necessary skills and the experience but might be doomed without that degree. So if you are “of a mature age” and can’t find a job, go to college.
You need to know that when you are older (like me), it is more difficult to study as we tend not to have the memory power that the younger people do, but don’t let a challenge stop you. If you are interested in getting a degree in an area that intrigues you, there is no better time than now to get going.
If you were recently laid off, and you reside in the United States, there are scholarships, grants, state-sponsored programs and student loans to help you. The financing is not difficult, and if you meet the requirements you will get the funds to pay for your education. And you don’t have to pay the loans back until you are done with school and get a job. The interest rates are reasonable, and the payment is not too big and can easily be made.
The first place to start is to find a school that offers programs that interest you. If there isn’t a specific program, pursue a general degree in business. Once you have a degree that is combined with your numerous years of experience, you will have a tremendous advantage to land that incredible job you have always desired. And even if you are new to the workplace, and just want a good paying job, education will provide you with the skills and knowledge you will need to have an edge.
Once you find a school that suits your needs, the counselors in the financial aid department are there to help you, so you are not alone. These people are experts on finding money for you and very helpful. They will complete the paperwork for you, make sure you meet the eligibility requirements and get you registered. The most popular way to go to college these days is online. That way, you don’t have to travel and can study in the comfort of your home. No excuses! Go for it and get that degree as it will make a difference in your life!
