Goal Setting – The first step

in Goal setting

Goal setting can take some time to master, especially if creating goals is not something you have practiced much. Once you learn how to master the skill, the art, the process of goal setting, however, you can make any dream you have into a reality.

So how does one go about mastering the art of goal setting? This is a good question, and numerous well known authors have written about it including Brian Tracy, Zig Ziglar, and Jack Canfield. One thing they all agree with when answering this question is that the first step of personal goal setting is to take full responsibility of your life.

Your life, as it is right now, is a direct result of the goals you have set (or not set). Put another way, goals are the result of planned (or unplanned) action (or inaction). I honestly believe that once you realize how the way that you think, the actions that you have taken, and your understanding of your place in the world, that you will then be able to achieve any goal you set your mind to.

When we do not take responsibility for our actions, we are often blaming people or situations for our circumstances. Excuses get in the way of setting goals and achieving them. Excuses are fatal to success. When we say things like, I didn’t/don’t have enough money to do that, I am not smart enough, I don’t have the support I need – these all seem like legitimate reasons as to why we are unable to succeed. When we focus on an excuse, or a problem, then it is hard to see a solution. So, the first step in successful goal setting is to see how you are responsible for your life. You then can start focusing on the solution and begin to set goals that can ultimately transform your life like you never imagined!

Take a moment now to think about some of the excuses that limit you from  goal setting and realizing your goals.  Are you able to see how these may be limiting your thoughts and also the actions you may (not) be taking?

In my next blog, I will give you an exercise that will help you recognize your excuses and thus eventually eliminate them so you can move onwards and upwards to attaining any goal you choose to set!

To your success!
