Millions of people around the United States and Canada are looking for ways to improve their lives.  They’ve headed to libraries and bookstores to seek out worthy materials to help them on their way to being more successful.  Or maybe they’ve purchased some motivational CDs or other audio programs.  Many have done both, and continue to do so on a regular basis.  But there are tens of thousands of others who are just beginning to travel down this road, and they wonder where they should start.  Well, a great place to start is with personal development plans.
What are personal development plans?  Well, it’s a comprehensive method of outlining and organizing your personal path to self improvement or success in a particular field.  It includes goal setting, and that’s one of the main components of a plan, but it’s far more than just setting goals.  The first thing to do is to get an accurate picture of where you are right now.  And you need to be honest and unflinching.  You can’t maximize your success if you’re kidding yourself about how far you need to go.  That’s the first step.

Next, you want to decide on an overarching goal which, when you achieve it, will constitute success.  That should be easy enough.  It can be an income goal, a fitness goal, a family goal, etc.    Once you’ve faced where you are, and decided where you want to be, you’ll need to outline how you’re going to get from Point A to Point B.  This is the meat of personal development plans.  You’ll break down the path from A to B into a series of steps, and give each one a time table for completion.  Then you’ll make a list of resources you’ll need to accomplish each step.  Don’t worry if you’re not sure what resources you’ll need for the later stages.  If you don’t know, then just map out what you need for the earlier ones.  You can work on the later stages as you approach them.  If you’ve never done a personal development plan before, there are excellent resources available which can help you craft a really effective one.  Get one, and follow it, and start on the road to making your dreams come true.
