Personal Development: The Direct Connection with Goal Setting

in Personal Development

Personal Development is key in setting and attaining your goals. There are numerous books you can read on this subject with some  of my favorites being Jack Canfield’s The Success Principles, Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich, and Robert Kiyosaki’s Rich Dad Series. You must change the way you think if you are not getting the results you want. Brian Tracy outlines six laws in an audio series I have called Action Strategies for Personal Achievement. I will go into a little detail about each law. I want you to think about them because (at least for me) it can honestly change the way you think, make you more aware of who you are and what you want, and get you on the right path towards setting and achieving your goals. Personal development is an interesting subject because often a person doesn’t think about it until they want to change something in their life. Here is the list:

1. The Law of Subconscious Activity: Any idea accepted as true in the conscious mind will be seen as a command by the subconscious. The subconscious will then try to bring this accepted idea into reality.  (What do you truly believe? I will never lose weight, I am really good at writing, I will never make enough money, I know I can get that promotion….What do you tell yourself?)

2. The Law of Concentration: The more you dwell on something in your thoughts, the more predominant it becomes in your life. Have you ever heard the phrase “Energy flows where attention goes?” (Are you dwelling on your negative or positive circumstances? Are you looking forward toward the solution, or backward toward the problem?)

3. The Law of Substitution: You can CHOOSE to change your thoughts and substitute a positive thought for a negative one. The conscious mind can only hold one thought at a time.

4. The Law of Habit: In an absence of determined effort (or setting and attaining your goals), you will stay the same, do the same, and have the same outcomes.

5. The Law of Practice: This law creates habits!

6. The Law of Emotion: Most, if not all, decisions are based on two emotions: fear and desire. If you can make your desire for success greater than your fear of failure/change, then you can set, plan, and achieve any goal you put your mind to!

Seriously, if you can learn to “master” these above laws of personal development, then you are on your way towards successful goal setting!
