Professional Goals: How to Balance With The Rest Of Your Life

by admin

in Career Goal Setting

Having professional goals is vital to success in any field, no matter what career you’ve chosen for yourself.  Unless you regularly set specific, written goals and work continuously to achieve them, at some point you’re going to take a long hard look at your work life and ask yourself how in the world you got there, and how can you get back on track.  Except for extremely rare cases such as a father passing a profitable business down to his son, no person ever achieves success without professional goals.
But while it’s imperative that you have career goals, it’s equally imperative that you balance these with the needs and demands of the rest of your life, especially those of your family.  Jesus asked “what shall it profit a man if he gain the whole world but lose his own soul?”  And while everyone wants to be rich, no one should want to do it at the cost of losing their family because they had no time for them.  It would be hard to classify that as success, no matter how big your bank account.  And at the end of our lives, we won’t even care about our money.  We’ll care about close relationships with our family.

So make sure that you balance your professional goals with your family and relationship goals.  You should have goals for those areas of your life, too, and as much as possible you should incorporate all your different goals so as to not conflict with each other.  And when there does seem to be a conflict, ask yourself if there isn’t an alternative way of achieving your career goal that won’t interfere with your personal and family objective.  Often there is, although it might take some creativity to come up with one.  If not, you’ll have to make a hard decision to either sacrifice one side or another, or sit down and adjust your goals.  But never let your career objectives destroy your family and personal life.  Always strive to find a balance.
