Set a Goal To Stop Drinking

There’s a saying that goes, “If you want to stop drinking, at some point you’re going to have to stop drinking.” For a lot of people, me included, that’s easier said then done.

I’m a recovered alcoholic. I have not had a drink or drug since March 12th 2006. Now, with that said, when I was drinking alcoholically, I like to say there were two things I hated! The way things were, and change. I quit drinking many times, but staying stopped was the problem. More often then not, I’d tell myself, “I’ll quit tomorrow,” yet tomorrow never comes right?

If you feel as if you drink too much, you probably do. I knew I had a drinking problem for years before I was willing to do anything about it. I hit many bottoms, but the one on March 12th 2006 was a low as I wanted to go; but that’s a whole different story. The point is we all get to choose our own bottom.

So if you want to stop drinking, set a goal for yourself. There’s no time like the present! And the present is a gift so start realizing that! I’ve learned a lot about alcoholism treatment over the years, and one thing I know is that by putting it off till tomorrow only makes it harder tomorrow.

Possibly you may be only abusing alcohol, if that’s the case; it may be beneficial to look at alcohol abuse treatment. A lot of times people are able to look at why they abuse alcohol and stop it before it develops into the disease of alcoholism. I actually know several people who were able to do just that.

Whether or not you abuse alcohol or are truly an alcoholic, only you can know. Like I said, I knew I was an alcoholic for years before I was forced out of desperation to try something different. So why not set a goal to stop drinking for a while and see how you feel?

The point is, if alcohol is causing problems in our lives, it’s probably an issue. It sounds simple enough, but we’ll go to amazing lengths to rationalize and justify our behavior. We want the problem to be anything but alcohol! Believe me, I know, I tried to blame everything and everyone else for my problems for years. Finally I realized it was me who had to change and it started with setting a realistic goal to stop drinking. By realistic, I meant, just for today! Maybe I’ll drink tomorrow, and as we all know, tomorrow never comes right!

That’s how I started with my goal to stop drinking. Eventually I got into a support group and starting working on a spiritual and holistic recovery program; which for me has made my life amazingly wonderful! Today I have no desire to drink and set new and better goals for myself every day!
