Writing Goals Down – Does it Help?

in Goal setting

If you’re searching for ways to be more successful, you’ve probably heard about the incredible power of goal setting.  But if you’re like most people, you may be a bit skeptical, wondering just what makes goal setting so important when it comes to being a success.  After all, you’ve had a goal of being financially independent ever since you were a kid, and yet you’ve come nowhere close to achieving it. You’re still working 8 hours a day for someone else.  And your brother in law has always had a goal of owning his own business, but he’s far from doing it.  So how important can goals be?

Well, goal setting involves a lot more than vague dreams.  It starts with writing goals and objectives down on paper, or these day, in a text document on your computer.  Until then, it isn’t really a goal.  It’s only a vague hope, a day dream, a fantasy.  But taking that first step by writing your goals and objectives down on paper, starts the ball rolling in the direction of actually achieving your dream.

Why is that?  Well, there are a lot of explanations for why goals become more powerful when you write them down.  Some say that the act of writing etches the goal into your subconscious and drives you toward that direction.  Others disagree with that, calling it a bunch of New Age mysticism.  They say it works simply because your goal had now taken a tangible form, moving from your mind to an actual material thing, the piece of paper, and this keeps you more focused on the goal.  But it really doesn’t matter if we ever understand exactly how or why it works.  All that really matters is that it does indeed work.  If you want to start achieving your dreams, you need to start writing goals and objectives down.
