Writing Goals Part 1: Blue Sky Thinking

in Goal setting

I want you to take a pen and paper right now and take a little time to write down what you want in 6 major categories: Physical, Mental, Financial, Emotional, Relational, and Spiritual. Within each category, write anything and everything that you can think of that you want in each….this is called “Blue Sky Thinking” because the sky is limitless.

Don’t worry about if you need money, or are to young, or too old, don’t feel qualified, etc. These are limitations (and often self imposed!). This exercise should take a while. Try and do this when you are in a positive mood and write what you WANT, not about what you DON”T want.

The purpose of this exercise is to be forward looking. It is also suppose to take you toward what you really want and really want to do in life. It is also suppose to balance between all of the major categories of life. While your financial goal may take precedent right now over everything else, you nevertheless will still have relationships with yourself and others, need to keep healthy, and be(come) emotionally sound.

The other thing about this exercise in writing goals is to that it should list everything that you want that is both external and internal. You may find that what you really want isn’t that materialistic, but rather completely internal. You may want a nice house and car, but it is more for the comfort and being at peace with yourself, rather than always struggling to make ends meet month after month.

Even if your wish is to be in the MLB, put it down even if you are 52 and never really learned how to play. This kind of thinking will lead you you directions you never saw before because you can answer your WHY question. For instance, maybe why you wanted to be in the MLB was because you wanted to be considered a top-notch athlete. Maybe this could lead you into the field of fitness.

Make this exercise of writing down your goals as if you had no limitations fun, and next we will cover creating your major definitive purpose!
